Chapter 8. Transitions > Adjusting Transition Settings

Adjusting Transition Settings

Each transition has its own set of customizable settings. The available options depend on the transition you're modifying. By modifying these settings, you can effectively expand your list of 75 transitions into an even greater selection. You can, for example, set the wipe transition to wipe in any of eight directions; you can make it hard-edged or soft-edged; you can add a border of any color or thickness. You can even set a static wipe, so that it works as a split-screen effect.

To adjust the start and end of the transition:

In the settings dialog box for the transition, do any of the following:

  • To show the starting and ending frames of the clips in the transition, check Show Actual Sources (Figures 8.60 and 8.61).

Figure 8.60. A and B icons represent clips in the transition.

Figure 8.61. Check Show Actual Sources to see the poster frames of the actual clips involved in the transition.

  • To define the initial and final appearances of the transition, drag the start and end sliders (Figures 8.62 and 8.63).

Figure 8.62. Drag the start and end sliders to define the initial and final appearance of the transition. A standard transition goes from 0 (showing only shot A) to 100 (showing only shot B).

Figure 8.63. In this example, the start and end sliders are both set to 50. Therefore, the transition is static, showing a mix of the A and B shots for the duration of the transition.

A standard transition starts at 0 and ends at 100. Hold down the key to set both sliders to the same value and move them together.
