Projects and Preview Files

When you save your project, any preview files that you created are associated with the project. When you open the project again, Premiere attempts to locate the preview files. If the preview files are present, you can still view the previewed portions of your program. If the preview files have been deleted or moved from your drive since you saved the project, Premiere will be unable to locate them. In this case, Premiere prompts you the same way it does when source files are missing (see Chapter 2). You must either confirm that the preview files are in a new location, or eliminate references to the file. In either case, you can still open the project. Of course, any previews that are still missing cannot be played back, and you may need to preview those sections of the program again.

To open a project with missing preview files:

1.
Open a Premiere project (see Chapter 2).

If preview files are missing, a Locate File dialog box opens (Figure 9.19).

Figure 9.19. When you open a project with missing preview files, a Locate File dialog box opens. You can either locate and select the files, or skip them.

2.
To find the file, do one of the following:

  • Allow Premiere to locate and select the missing preview file automatically.

  • Navigate to the missing preview file and select it.

  • Click Find to open a Find File dialog box to search for the file.

Premiere often finds the right file, but not always. Always compare the name of the missing file with the one you select to make sure they match.

3.
Choose one of the following options in the Locate File dialog box:

Select (Mac) or OK (Windows)— to replace the missing file with the selected file.

Skip—to disassociate the missing file from the project.

Skip All—to disassociate all missing files from the project without being prompted for confirmation. Select this option with caution.

Skip Preview Files—to disassociate only the missing preview files from the project without being prompted for confirmation. Select this if you know that none of the missing preview files are available.

After you specify the status of missing preview files, the project opens.

4.
To save the file with the current file references, choose File > Save.
