Previewing to Screen

Like a RAM preview, the Preview to Screen option can be one of the faster preview methods, as long as you don't mind the preview playing at less than the project frame rate. However, previewing to screen is not limited by the amount of RAM you have. But because it renders frames as quickly as possible, its results are greatly influenced by the amount and complexity of effects, the image size and resolution, and the speed of your system.

To select a preview method:

1.
Choose Project > Project Settings > Keyframe and Rendering (Figure 9.10).

The Keyframe and Rendering panel of the Project Settings dialog box appears (Figure 9.11).

2.
In the Preview pull-down menu, choose a preview method (Figure 9.12):

From Disk renders preview files to disk, as preview files.

From RAM renders previews to RAM.

To Screen renders previews on the fly.

3.
In the Preview At pull-down menu, choose a resolution (Figure 9.13):

1:1 previews at the project's full resolution.

1:2 previews at one half the project's resolution.

1:4 previews at one fourth the project's resolution.

This option is available for previewing to RAM and to screen only.

4.
Click OK to close the Project Settings dialog box.
