Previewing to RAM

Premiere 5.1 introduced the ability to use the RAM in your computer to preview effects. Because frames aren't written to and played back from disk, previewing to RAM can get quicker results.

On the down side, previews are limited to the amount of RAM you can allocate to Premiere. And because old previews are purged from RAM to make room for new ones, you may end up previewing areas more than once. If the processing demands are too high, frames may be dropped during playback. If not enough RAM is available to process the preview, Premiere displays the message, "Previewing from Disk," and uses that method instead. For these reasons, you may want to set the project settings for a relatively small frame size and frame rate to get the most from your RAM previews.
