Chapter 12. Creating Titles > Background Opacity

Background Opacity

The remaining title window option allows you to specify whether you want the title to have an opaque background color or whether you want to assign a transparency value, or alpha channel, to the background. As you will learn in Chapter 13, you can use the alpha channel to make the background transparent and superimpose the title over another clip.

To set the background opacity for a title:

1.
With a title window active, choose Window > Window Options > Title Window Options (Figure 12.32).

Figure 12.32. Choose Window > Window Options > Title Window Options.

The Title Window Options dialog box appears.

2.
Do either of the following (Figure 12.33):

Figure 12.33. Check the Opaque checkbox to use an opaque background color; leave the box unchecked if you are going to superimpose the title over another clip (explained in Chapter 13).

  • To make the background color opaque, check the Opaque checkbox.

    or

  • To enable the background as an alpha channel, leave the Opaque checkbox unchecked.

3.
Click OK to close the Title Window Options dialog box.

The Opacity setting isn't apparent in the title window itself. Unchecking the Opacity checkbox simply assigns a transparency value—or alpha channel—to the background. The background appears transparent in the program view only after an alpha channel key type has been applied to the title. For more information, see "Alpha Channel Key Types" in Chapter 13.
