Using the Simple Choker

A typical problem with mattes is that they are slightly too large, revealing an unpleasant edge. The solution is to choke it. It's nothing violent. Choking simply shrinks the mask slightly. The Simple Choker effect can either choke or spread a matte to make a cleaner composite.

To use the Simple Choker:

1.
Select the layer containing the matte (Figure 15.29).

Choose Effect > Matte Tools > Simple Choker (Figure 15.30).

The Simple Choker effect appears selected in the Effect Controls window (Figure 15.31).

3.
Choose an option from the View pull-down menu (Figure 15.32):

Final Output lets you see the composited image in the Composition window

Matte lets you see the matte in the Composition window

Set a value for Choke Matte to shrink or spread the matte (Figure 15.33).

Negative values spread the matte; positive values choke, or shrink, the matte.

5.
To see the final composited image in the Composition window, set the View option to Final Output.
