Chapter 9. Mask Essentials > Feathering Mask Edges

Feathering Mask Edges

The Mask Feather property controls the softness of a mask's edge. The Mask Feather value determines the width of the edge's transition from opacity to transparency. The feathered width always extends equally from each side of the mask edge, so that a feather value of 30 would extend 15 pixels both outside and inside the mask edge.

To feather the edges of a mask:

1.
In the Layer window or Time Layout window, select a mask.

2.
Do any of the following things:

Press Shift-Command-F (Mac) or Shift-Ctrl-F (Windows).

Choose Layer > Mask > Mask Feather (Figure 9.83).

Figure 9.83. Select a mask and choose Layer > Mask > Feather or its keyboard equivalent.

In the layer outline of the Time Layout window, click the Mask Feather value for the mask.

The Mask Feather dialog box appears.

3.
In the Mask Feather dialog box, enter the number of pixels for the horizontal and vertical feathering (Figure 9.84).

Figure 9.84. In the Mask Feather dialog box, enter a value for the horizontal and vertical mask feather.

To enter equal values for horizontal and vertical feather automatically, check Lock.

4.
Click OK to close the Mask Feather dialog box.

The mask edges appear feathered by the value you specified (Figure 9.85).

Figure 9.85. The edge of the mask feathers, or softens, by the amount you specified.
