Inverting a Mask

Ordinarily, the area within a closed layer mask defines the opaque parts of the layer's image; the area outside the mask is trans parent, revealing the layers beneath it. Just as you can invert a layer's alpha channel, you can invert a layer mask to reverse the opaque and transparent areas.

To invert a mask created in After Effects:

1.
In the Layer window or Time Layout window, select the mask you want to invert.

2.
Do one of the following things:

In the Time Layout window, check Invert for the selected mask (Figure 9.69).

Choose Layer > Mask > Invert.

Press Shift-Command-I (Mac) or Shift-Ctrl-I (Windows).

Viewed in the Composition window, the mask is inverted (Figure 9.70 and Figure 9.71).
