Importing Files

After Effects allows you to import a wide variety of still images, motion footage, and audio as well as projects from After Effects and Premiere.

The procedures for importing footage are essentially variations on a theme, so you should get the hang of it quickly. Though you may be tempted to speed through some sections, make sure you understand how the methods differ for each file type. Depending on the file, you may need to invoke the Interpret Footage command, which contains special handling options such as how to set the duration of stills, or the frame rate of motion footage. The Interpret Footage command also allows you to properly handle aspects of footage, such as the alpha channel, field order, and pixel aspect ratio. If you're already familiar with these concepts, then go right to the numbered tasks; if not, check out the sidebars for some technical grounding.
