Pre-composing

As you have surmised, nesting compositions and creating hierarchies of elements can require a substantial degree of planning. You can't always anticipate the need to nest, however. Fortunately, you can repackage layers of an existing composition into a nested composition by using a method called pre-composing.

The Pre-compose command places one or more selected layers in a nested composition (or if you prefer, pre-comp). In a single step, it accomplishes an otherwise tedious reorganization process (Figure 14.32 and Figure 14.33).
