Chapter 14. Complex Projects

Chapter 14. Complex Projects

As your projects become more ambitious, their structure becomes more complex. A typical project contains not only layers created from individual footage items, but also layers created from other compositions, called nested compositions. Nesting not only permits you to group layers into a single element, but also enables you to manipulate the project's hierarchy and create effects you couldn't achieve otherwise.

This chapter describes methods for nesting compositions, and explains their various uses. It also outlines the render order, After Effects'scheme for rendering frames. You'll learn how the render order influences your results, and how you in turn can influence the render order. You'll also find out how to inspect your work with the new flowchart view, and reduce the time it takes to render and preview your work by using a process called pre-rendering.
