Chapter 3. Preparing Your Computer and M... > Freeing Up Space on Your Hard Drive

Freeing Up Space on Your Hard Drive

Today's hard drives provide dozens of gigabytes of storage, but they aren't limitless. Today's 3D games often require 700 MB of space, and a lengthy digital video clip can easily gobble a gigabyte, so it's actually more important than ever to make sure you've got enough open territory on your hard drive! Besides the space required to hold your material, you also need free space because:

  • Your recording software will need additional space for temporary files; these files are deleted once the recording has finished.

  • Your computer may need space to convert files from one format to another (such as WAV audio files to MP3 audio) or compress digital video before it can be recorded.

  • Windows will need additional space for virtual memory (hard drive space Windows uses as “temporary RAM” when your PC runs out of memory). Figure 3.1 illustrates how virtual memory works.

Figure 3.1. With virtual memory, a PC can run programs that use more memory.
