Before We Begin

In this chapter, I'm going to demonstrate how to install both the Hewlett-Packard DVD-Writer DVD200i—an internal EIDE device—and an external FireWire or USB drive such as the HP DVD200e. Although it's harder to install an internal drive than an external recorder, the step-by-step procedure in this chapter should be all you need. If you have another brand of EIDE DVD recorder, you don't have to skip this material! EIDE devices are very standardized (they have to be to be so compatible); therefore, the steps you'll read here will also work with virtually every combination of EIDE DVD recorder and a PC.

There is the possibility that your drive may require special software or use a different jumper configuration than the DVD200i recorder. Because of the chance that you'll encounter something different, I strongly recommend that you read the installation instructions for your recorder! Once you're familiar with the installation instructions for your particular drive model, you can follow the steps I provide in this chapter—and if the installation instructions for your drive differ significantly from mine, you can follow them instead.
