Can I play an audio CD on either my internal HP recorder or my CD-ROM if my sound card has only one input?

Yes. Use an audio “Y” cable connector. Some of these connectors require that a small switch be installed in the system case. Toggling the switch will enable you to select either drive for playback. Some newer sound cards allow two devices to be connected, so check with your sound card manufacturer before buying a Y cable connector.

Some sound cards have more than one audio connector, but they're not suitable for connecting two devices—the extra connector is only to accommodate different styles of audio cables. Attaching more than one CD-ROM/CD-Writer to these types of sound cards is not recommended. Check with your sound card manufacturer before connecting more than one drive. For example, some versions of the Sound Blaster Live sound card have an SP/DIF digital input, which is not compatible with the output from a recorder.
