Group Techniques

Effective team decision making doesn't just happen—it's hard work! A large percentage of a facilitator's time is spent helping teams make decisions. This entails generating the ideas for solutions and then selecting the best answer. This issue of Infoline describes a number of ways to improve small-group problem solving and decision making. It will increase awareness of the wide range of decision-making techniques available to team members and facilitators; offer more than a dozen practical and creative methods to motivate, energize, and focus teams; and aid in clarifying problems, setting priorities, generating solutions, and evaluating outcomes. You can apply these methods to productivity improvement groups, quality teams, and task forces and committees.

This issue will cover idea-generating techniques (including brainstorming and method 6-3-5) and decision-making techniques (including spectrum listening and consensus cards). In employing these techniques, remember the hardware store's credo: “Use the right tool for the right job.”
