BBB (Battelle-Bildmappen-Brainwriting) can jump-start a team in a rut. In this technique, the facilitator diverts the team's attention from the task at hand, and has team members look at magazine and newspaper pictures. The seemingly unrelated information will act as a catalyst for exploring creative alternatives and solutions. To be effective, this technique should be a surprise and used infrequently.

  • Prior to the session, prepare a folder for each participant of random photographs from various newspapers and magazines.

  • When the team is at a standstill, interrupt the group and distribute the folders.

  • Instruct the group to scan the images and write down any ideas or modifications of old ideas suggested by the photos.

  • After 15 to 20 minutes, teams members discuss their ideas.
