Facilitators and their Roles > Skills Required

Skills Required

The facilitator's role, while rather broad, is crucial to the success of the team. A good facilitator basically checks his or her personal concerns and causes at the door. Glenn Varney, president of Management Advisory Associates in Bowling Green, Ohio, suggests that facilitators should have the following skills:

Listening

The facilitator needs to be able to listen actively and hear what every team member is saying. “A day spent facilitating is as tiring as a day spent chopping wood,” Quinlivan-Hall and Renner note. (For more on listening skills, see Info-line No. 8806, “Listening to Learn; Learning to Listen.”)
