Communication Tactics

How a virtual team interacts during collaboration efforts may be in part dictated by the technology chosen. Groups that use real-time chat applications may collaborate more freely and openly and on a more regular basis. Real-time chats may be limited by time zone differences, but most commercial chat applications allow members to leave messages. Although the chat feature functions in the same way that an email would in collaboration, it is less formal and tends to encourage quicker responses.

Shared database systems that allow members to check documents in and out can reduce “lost” document downtime. Members who wish to access a document that is checked out know who checked it out and when. The leader, or a member serving as a document supervisor, can monitor how long a document has been checked out and whether specific documents are being regularly updated based on the team progress.
