Develop Leadership

Responsibilities and decision-making authority should be specified in the early stages of virtual team development. The team also should establish a decision process: Will decisions be reached only by a unanimous vote, unanimous minus one, majority, or another method? Determining the responsibilities of individual team members and the team as a group can prevent problems arising out of unequal expectations.

If, for instance, one team member expects the group outcome to be a full publication and other team members see the eventual product to be merely a recitation of research findings or a comprehensive bibliography, the group will be at odds very early in the life cycle. The member who expects a publication will find fault with documentation standards or quantities of contributions by other members, while other team members will fault one another for being overly detailed or verbose. It is essential for each team member to clearly see the big picture.
