Countdown to Team Success

For your team to reach its goals, every team member has to know the team’s mission, be able to recognize success, and be willing to work with other team members to achieve the common goal. Establishing the team’s purpose and direction during its launch is the first and most fundamental factor of team effectiveness. If team members disagree on why they are together and what they are trying to accomplish, problems will inevitably arise to negatively affect the team’s performance.

Establishing purpose and direction provides a context for roles and responsibilities to be understood and accepted. When these keys are developed during the team’s launch, team members can better grasp the significance of why they and the others are being expected to perform certain tasks. They can see how doing what is expected will contribute to achieving the team’s goal(s). Once team members have a clear understanding of what they are supposed to do, procedures and practices can help them shape the best way of working together to coordinate their activities.
