CASE STUDY: THE COMPLAINING EMPLOYEES

Joyce and Sue work in computer services under Kimberly’s supervision. They are both depressed about their jobs and have been complaining to each other.

Joyce is unhappy because she was never given her job description and has only a limited understanding of what is expected of her. When she asked Kimberly about it, she was told, “Don’t worry, I’ll keep you busy.” Joyce never receives a new assignment until she completes the previous one she was assigned. Sometimes a day or more will pass before Kimberly is able to give Joyce a new project. Recently Joyce started helping a co-worker because she had nothing else to do. Kimberly later told her: “Don’t do that again. Assigning the work is my responsibility.” Joyce has since been criticized by her co-workers for not pitching in when they are busy and she is not.
