Individual Motivations

Establishing yourself as a strong leader also requires creating a working climate in which team members can meet individual needs while achieving team goals. No single technique works for everyone because people work for a variety of reasons.

What is important for one person may have little significance to another. Some people work for basic survival needs while others are seeking security. Some work to fulfill ego satisfaction or something even deeper. Motivation is personal and supervisors must get to know individual employees to learn what motivates them. This requires time and effort but the results are worth it, as illustrated in the story on the next page.
