Chapter 3. Helping Your Team Succeed > Individual vs. Team Work

Individual vs. Team Work

Good teamwork depends on working with others and helping them do their part. Cooperation becomes all important. To oil the wheels of a team, you need to understand, get along with, and respect your teammates. Good team members cover for and support each other without being asked. This is a major change for people who’ve spent their lives being trained to compete, look out for number one, and do things their own way.

Teamwork requires that you get to know your teammates’ work histories, skills, and personalities. Plan to visit one another’s work areas and to talk about your current jobs. If you pay attention, you’ll learn a lot about one another during training and team meetings. You might even have the luxury of a team-building retreat dedicated to building relationships. Spending time and effort building working partnerships will improve team chemistry.
