B TEAM SUMMARY

Lessons Learned

B” Team members found this process more difficult than they had imagined in the beginning. While members agreed on the priority activities, initiatives, and stewardship, they found that they spent a significant amount of their day-to-day time on other work. Since people are conditioned to view the business plan as something that gets done because it is required by others, members were not used to using it as a management tool.

Members also found that priorities often shift throughout the year. Although they all felt that they gave due consideration to priority initiatives, day-to-day emergencies took up their time. They discovered that it took extra time to inform one another, and that it was difficult to focus on the business plan because of the rapidly changing business environment. They agree that although this process takes more time, they can keep their employees better informed and see linkages between work efforts. The final product was better than that produced in the past because it contained realistic input over time, rather than a last-minute exercise of information-gathering and number-crunching. The business plan also became a useful management tool.
