A TEAM SUMMARY

Lessons Learned

This team represents a complex teaming situation, since team members worked remotely and traveled frequently. The team’s success was due to each member’s firm commitment to the team’s mission and to one another. They wanted their collaborative work to be successful, and they each committed to extending themselves to make sure it happened. They were persistent in overcoming technical challenges, patient with the learning curves as members worked to keep up with each other, and conscientious at keeping each other informed.

This team progressed through the initial forming stage of team development with ease. The biggest challenge they incurred was how to move forward without face-to-face interaction. Members had to learn to articulate concerns in thoughtful and persistent ways and to listen to each other. As members viewed the world from their own unique realities, it was important for them to work hard at understanding the realities of their fellow teammates. The occasional face-to-face meetings were critical for investing in the continuous improvement of the team’s work processes and to build open, trusting relationships. All of these things—in addition to the groupware system that the team accessed daily—maximized their success.
