Preface

Preface

Virtual teams have emerged as a new form of collaborative work, designed specifically to meet the many challenges associated with global and mobile team membership. Advances in communication technologies (e.g., voicemail, fax, groupware, email) provide the options of flexibility and mobility needed to enhance team performance across geographic boundaries. Members of a virtual team face new challenges, both organizationally and personally, as they learn to communicate by using the multiple forms of electronic communication made available to them.

Virtual Teaming: Breaking the Boundaries of Time and Place will increase your understanding of the challenges, skills, and competencies needed to succeed in a virtual team. This book is divided into five sections to guide you through the various aspects of virtual work. These sections include:

Part 1: Introduction

Part 2: Joining a Virtual Team

Part 3: Getting Started: Considerations, Assessments, and Tools

Part 4: Technology and Communication

Part 5: Case Studies and Review

Several exercises and templates are included throughout this book to help you and your team build the skills and competencies needed to maximize success when working in a virtual team.
