Handling Conflict

Working through conflict is always a challenge for virtual teams. It is one thing to talk about tough issues in a face-to-face meeting; it is much more difficult over the phone or by email. Without the advantage of body language, tone of voice, and physical proximity, expressing negative emotions is difficult. You will see in Part IV, some written symbols (emoticons) and acronyms that have evolved to express emotions through email.

Virtual team members can be most effective in resolving conflict if they:

Speak up quickly if things seem to be going poorly

Clarify the problem and offer suggestions for improving it

Accept their own part in the problem and seek feedback from others

Stay positive—avoid threatening, criticizing, or blaming others

Acknowledge the areas of agreement first (common ground), then discuss the areas of disagreement
