Part II: Joining a Virtual Team > Key Ingredient 2 Shared Accountability

Chapter 11. Key Ingredient 2 Shared Accountability

An effective virtual team consists of a group of people committed to working together to achieve a common goal. All players must recognize that they have an important contribution to make, and they cannot do it alone. They must learn quickly that for the team to be successful, each person must, at times, set aside personal ambitions or grudges and focus on team goals. Members must hold themselves personally accountable (so that others can depend on them) and, in turn, they will rely on the commitments of others. Everyone has something to lose and something to gain.

A virtual team member who shares accountability will:

Recognize and accept the responsibility of shared leadership

Avoid passing blame, focusing on what needs to be done

Always give more than expected

Follow through on all commitments and never drop the ball

Speak up and work through obstacles

Never let a fellow team member stumble; go the “extra mile” to help them succeed
