Part I: Introduction > Why the Move toward Virtual Teams?

Chapter 1. Why the Move toward Virtual Teams?

In today’s competitive business environment where innovation and “speed to market” are crucial, teaming plays a vital business role in bringing key contributors together to focus on joint work objectives, common problems, and developing innovative solutions. Modern technology enables the best minds to come together wherever they reside. Teaming opportunities exist not only with co-workers in your office, but with people everywhere. Virtual teams appear in many companies as new offices expand around the world and the trend toward home offices and telecommuting increases.

Virtual Team:

A group of people within the same organization, or from different organizations, who work together on a common goal. They are located at different work sites, or travel frequently, and must rely upon communication technologies (such as telephone, fax, and computer) to share information, collaborate, and coordinate their work efforts. Virtual teams are driven by an urgent need to work together, shared accountability, commitment to teamwork, and active communication.
