Part V: Case Studies and Review > Understanding Technology and Teamwork

Chapter 34. Understanding Technology and Teamwork

The experiences represented in the team scenarios bring us closer to understanding potential benefits and challenges associated with technology and teamwork. It is critical that the human and technical processes keep pace with one another during a period of rapid growth, change, and innovation. A rapidly changing business environment drives the need for collaborative work, that is then supported by technology, to enhance teamwork.

Virtual teams that have mastered technology enhancements and developed the corresponding human systems have made significant improvements in productivity. They can continually build on each other’s work, retrieving prior work, and adapting to new situations without reinventing the materials each time. Using communication technologies, such as groupware, they can produce collaborative work products faster by rapidly exchanging information in a virtual work space. Team communication, coordination, and collaboration is enhanced with continuous electronic group dialogue, diminishing the need for frequent face-to-face meetings.
