Chapter 17. Team Training > Just-In-Time Team Training

Just-In-Time Team Training

The recommended agenda for team kick-off training just scratches the surface of what high-performance teams eventually master. Of course, it’s impractical to teach a forming team everything they’ll need to know all at once. Even if you could teach everything at one sitting, most people would forget what they don’t apply immediately. So reality presents us with another critical question: How do you get to other important training while the team gets some work done?

Just-in-time training is the solution. Start the team with as much intensive training as possible. Since you’ll never cover everything needed, remain alert to training gaps that occur. Respond with short sessions appropriate to what the team is working on. Midstream intensive workshops help, but 5 to 30 minute modules at the right spot can meet 80 percent of the team’s remaining training needs.
