The Forming Stage

“Forming” stage teams tend to be:

  • Unclear and uncertain about what to do and how to behave

  • Polite and quiet with cautious participation

  • Unfamiliar, tentative, hesitant, anxious or suspicious

  • Interested only superficially, with little in-depth listening

  • Worried about making a contribution and concerned about getting hurt

  • Ambivalent but dependent on the team leader or dominant personality

  • Uncommitted with little attachment and little work accomplished
