Chapter 12. Team Charter

The members of the world’s fastest teams have a sharp sense of direction and solid understanding of how their work relates to organizational goals. This understanding is achieved with a charter, which is a clear, written, agreed-upon description of the team’s mission and how it relates to organizational goals, including general direction, membership and empowerment. It serves as a contract of key team mechanics among team members and between them and the team sponsor.

A team charter should be a two-way street. It defines what the team commits to do for the team sponsor and what the team sponsor agrees to do in return. Charters are constructed from answers to the following questions. Use only those elements that help unify team and sponsor.
