Storming Symptoms

If individuals’ issues take higher priority than collective success, the project probably will fail. The team will be distracted, cooperation becomes difficult, morale drops, time is lost, and progress may be halted. This can happen at any point of team growth but is widespread during the storming stage, which may include the following symptoms.

  • Overt challenges and disagreements

  • Demands about personal concerns and independence

  • Criticism, attacks and strong emotional reactions

  • Jealousy and distrust of team members

  • Hidden agendas, turf politics, cliques and splinter groups

  • Testing leadership and control

  • Stress, confusion and distractions

  • Work accomplished only in fits and starts
