Chapter 11. Team Meeting Roles > The Discussion Moderator

The Discussion Moderator

The most challenging role is that of Discussion Moderator who directs the participation, but doesn’t evaluate what is said.

Controlling a dialogue has three phases: 1) starting—getting individual or group discussions going, 2) guiding—steering the dialoge once started, and 3) stopping—summarizing, wrapping up or getting people to stop when they’ve already finished. These subskills are detailed in the following Discussion Moderator Skills Checklist. Use this checklist to assess the effectiveness of a discussion moderator and to identify those subskills needing development.
