The following list provides some guidelines to help the team manage the project.

  • Chart or graph the project plan for a visible reminder.

  • Hold a meeting or event to start the project.

  • Issue action items in writing according to the plan.

  • Discuss all assignments in conjunction with written action items to ensure understanding and commitment.

  • Encourage people, and provide guidance and support as needed.

  • Distribute brief synopses of progress and problems to those involved in the project so that everyone stays informed.

  • Use Management By Wandering Around so the team won’t be surprised.

  • Monitor activities routinely and at planned checkpoints.

  • Recognize completed steps and check them off the plan.

  • Acknowledge individual contributors when they meet their targets.

  • Immediately respond to indicators of trouble and act accordingly.

  • Adjust the plan as needed to meet the overall project.

  • Conduct team meetings when group action is essential to coordinate, adjust or trouble shoot.

  • Watch for loose ends as the project winds down and insure they get completed on time.

  • Document the entire project, including the plan, midstream changes, learning experiences, problems encountered and solutions that worked.

  • Publicly announce successful completion of the project, recognizing all those who contributed.
