Chapter 6. Encouraging Participation

Eight people in a team are smarter than any one person. However, to reach the best decision, the team members must be in an environment that encourages them to express their thoughts, ideas and experiences.

Experienced facilitators will tell you that the greatest and most important tool in successful facilitation is gaining involvement and participation from the group members. The measure of the team’s success largely derives from both the quantity and quality of the team’s involvement. In every stage of team development, involvement is the essential element. The team’s level of involvement will depend on several factors including the creation of a climate of trust and openness to help the team work more effectively as it matures.
