Chapter 11. Six-Step Problem-Solving Pro... > Step Three: Identify Major Causes

Step Three: Identify Major Causes

Step three represents the analysis segment of group problem solving. Team members are also prone to pay only cursory attention to this step in anticipation of moving to the solutions of step four. Again, slow the team down and focus adequate attention on the analysis required for effective problem solving.

Team problem-solving tools begin to play an increasingly important role in this step. For example, given a mission and objective, the team members will be confronted with several tasks. First, they will need to collect and analyze data. Then they will need to break the data down into “bite size” bits. Next they will need to establish data patterns and trends. Lastly, taking this data into consideration, they can brainstorm all potential causes and then establish and test for the root cause or causes.
