Chapter 11. Six-Step Problem-Solving Pro... > Step Two: Clarify Team Objectives

Step Two: Clarify Team Objectives

The team objectives are a further refinement of the team mission. For example, the team mission is to reduce workers’ compensation claims in the plant. The team might further focus that mission into an objective of reducing workers’ compensation claims by 30 percent. Thus the mission gives broad direction; the objective gives specific direction.

As a facilitator, you will find teams have a propensity to quickly move through step two. Be alert to this tendency and work to slow team efforts in this step. Proper attention to setting objectives tends to be hard work. It requires intense collaboration and reclarification. Experienced facilitators recommend that up to 30 percent of a team’s total time be invested in step two. Why? If the team’s objective is not clearly understood by all, it will most likely result in a “stuck” group in later steps.
