Chapter 12. Getting Group Agreement > What if the Group gets Stuck?

What if the Group gets Stuck?

Regardless of the team tools used and the maturity of team members, occasionally consensus will not be possible. Assuming that the facilitator has given the group adequate time to work through the differences, she might consider any of the following.

  • Agree to not agree, and then move to a related issue. If necessary, return to the original issue at a later time.

  • Rely on the governance document for voting as an alternative (if established).

  • Change topics for a while.

  • Call a recess to allow issues to settle; take it back up at the next meeting.

  • Work toward a compromise decision knowing it may not be the best decision.

  • Rely on team leader’s position to make an “edict” decision (less desirable).

  • Refer item to sponsor group for a decision (less desirable).
