Exericise: Interpreting Body Language

Here are some other examples of desirable and undesirable nonverbal behaviors. In the space provided, note your impressions of how these behaviors might be interpreted by the team member speaking at the time.

1: Facilitator looks at her watch.

A: “You wish I’d stop talking. You’re thinking about what you’ll do later today.”
2: Facilitator gazes out the window for several seconds.

A: “You’re daydreaming and not listening to what I have to say. Why should I bother to participate?”
3: Facilitator yawns.

__________________________________________

A: “You’re bored with what I’m saying.”
4: Facilitator leans forward and maintains eye contact with speaking team member.

__________________________________________

A: “You must be interested in what I have to say.”
5: Facilitator scratches his chin and nods.

__________________________________________

A: “I must have said something very insightful!”
6: Facilitator makes brief notes on his notepad.

__________________________________________

A: “You must want to remember what I’m saying.”
7: Facilitator makes lengthy notes on her notepad.

__________________________________________

A: “How can you attentively listen to me and write at the same time?”
8: Facilitator laughs or smiles.

__________________________________________

A: “You’re obviously listening to me, otherwise you would not have detected the humor in my comment.”

OR

“Are you laughing at me? I am trying to be serious. What is so funny?”

9: Facilitator drums pencil on table.

A: “You are impatient. You do not like my ideas. It is obvious that you want me to shut up.”
