Chapter 21. Telecommuting > Virtual pioneers

Virtual pioneers

The adoption and promotion of a teleworking program requires a major cultural shift within organizations. Since many managers and employees are used to and feel comfortable with daily contact, many are unable to adjust to a workplace that does not have constant physical interaction among employees. Successful teleworking programs require a shift away from internally focused processes toward customer-focused initiatives and results-based employee measurement standards.

For example, managers of teleworkers cannot base the employees’ performance on time-based measurement standards, such as a 40-hour workweek. Instead, managers must re-design their performance standards to focus on a project’s quality or a customer’s satisfaction level.
