Desire for information permanence

Communication technologies with a high level of permanence create an historical record of a team’s discussions. E-mail offers a high level of permanence because the team’s communications can be stored and referred to at a later time. An audio conference or videoconference offers no permanence unless someone records and transcribes the conversation.

It is important to remember that much of the information exchanged during team interactions does not require a permanent record. In fact, many teams compile large amounts of data that are not needed and are never referred to again.
