Part II: Fundamentals of virtual teams > Conducting an orientation session

Chapter 6. Conducting an orientation session

Explanation

Conducting a face-to-face orientation session is the ideal way to orient participants to the virtual team setting. Since team members must develop a complex plan for team performance during their first interaction, meeting face-to-face helps team members feel comfortable with one another and with the team’s structure. Meeting face-to-face also helps facilitate the understanding among team members that they need to make important decisions. During the orientation session, virtual team members need to make several decisions about how and when they’ll communicate with one another. Team members need to begin formulating the team norms that’ll deem behavior that is acceptable or unacceptable and begin determining the communication protocols that’ll govern the team’s communication.
