Chapter 8. Effectiveness > Increasing motivation

Increasing motivation

Team members must feel that the meeting’s discussion pertains to their life and their well being. If team members do not see the effect that the meeting’s discussion will have on the way they conduct business, they are likely not to participate in the meeting. However, team members can apply the following guidelines to increase each other’s motivation to participate:

  • Relate information discussed in the meeting to each team member’s daily life.

  • Create ownership in the meeting’s discussion by asking everyone how they feel about the topic at hand.

  • Use groupware when creating documents so that everyone feels “buy in” on the final product.

  • Structure meetings so that team members are present only during discussions that relate to them.
