Chapter 10. Decision-making > Technological effects

Technological effects

The use of technology can have a profound impact on how a virtual team progresses through the decision-making process. Using technologies that are low-interaction, such as e-mail or chat rooms can help alleviate the social pressures experienced during the decision-making process. Since members can vote or rank options anonymously when using low-interaction technologies, members are more likely to support the option they feel works best rather than the option supported by the majority of the team.

However, members should communicate via high-interaction technologies or face-to-face when using consensus to make decisions since the use of consensus requires a great deal of discussion between team members. Consensus cannot be an effective way to make decisions if team members must communicate by using low-interaction technologies. To make the process of using consensus effective, virtual team members must be able to hear and see one another so they can work together to find the best possible solution.
