Chapter 10. Decision-making > Challenges while making decisions

Challenges while making decisions

Virtual teams can encounter many challenges when making decisions. Many times, members are required to make a decision without being able to access the data that explains the decision’s significance. For example, a sales team cannot make a decision about how to sell a product if they cannot access data that outlines the product’s sales demographics. Organizations must provide their virtual teams with the technology necessary to keep members constantly updated on changes that affect their work.

Virtual teams also confront the challenge of trying to make inclusive decisions in a virtual environment. The difficulty of building and communicating team consensus across distance is one major aspect of this challenge. For example, members might not know when to bring closure to an issue if the communication is highly formal and linear. Decision-making can be difficult even when a virtual team is using a videoconference or audio conference to communicate since these technologies do not lend themselves to the spontaneous discussion that builds momentum for consensus.
