Exercises

1: In the following scene, Paul (project team member), Melissa (project team member), and David (project team member) are seated in the conference room.

Paul: Let’s just take a look at the market demographics. There’s no way to make a decision before we know who buys the product.

Melissa: Okay, let’s take a look. But, last week when I looked, they hadn’t updated the figures from a survey taken five years ago.

Paul: Okay, here we go. Here they are. Wait, these are the old numbers. Jim promised me that he’d update these figures at our last team meeting.

David: Are the figures kept anywhere else? Anywhere that we’d have access?

Paul: No, this is all kept at our San Francisco office. I’ll have to call Jim and have him put the new information in the computer.

Melissa: Well, that’s going to take a while—we’ll have to postpone our decision, I guess.

Paul: Yeah, let me call Jim, and I’ll get back to both of you.

Based on your experiences, describe a situation where you encountered challenges while making decisions as part of a virtual team. Discuss with the class.

2: When making inclusive decisions in a virtual environment, why is building and communicating team consensus across distances a major aspect to consider? Provide examples and discuss with the class.
