Chapter 24. Unit summary: Preparing teams for project work

Topic A In this unit, you learned that there are several exercises that encourage team building. In addition, empowering your team members will demonstrate your trust in them and encourage them to trust one another. Then, you learned about team motivation and three well-known motivational theories: Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y, and Herzberg’s Theory. You also learned that another way to help build your team is by providing a supportive climate. Then you learned that teams take on their organization’s culture and that, as a team leader, you need to develop a positive physical, emotional, and collaborative culture for your team.
Topic B Next, you learned about various factors that might result in change. You learned that a team can experience a change in needs, vision, the organization, or personnel while working on a project. Because these types of change can affect the team’s success, it is critical that you provide extra support during periods of change.
Topic C Finally, you learned that, as a team leader, you can always improve your listening skills and your nonverbal and verbal communication skills in order to improve your communication with the team. Then you learned about developing language characteristics using the TRUST acronym to remember what’s critical to good communication. You also learned that it is the responsibility of the team management to encourage the team to focus on deliverables.
