Exercises

1: In the following scene, John, a project team member, Marisa, a project team member, and Nicholas, the project manager, are seated in the conference room.

John: Nicholas, Marisa and I want to clarify our roles in the team. I know that you assigned me to be the facilitator...

Marisa: ...and I’m the recorder...

John: All the same, which one of us is supposed to keep time for the meeting? We agreed that our meetings shouldn’t last for more than an hour. Who is responsible for keeping track of time?

Nicholas: Looks like I didn’t explain your roles very well, and I’m sorry if it caused a conflict. Since we don’t have a designated timekeeper, it is the responsibility of the facilitator to keep track of time. If you’d like, you can assign the job to another team member.

John: Can I assign the job to Marisa in addition to her duties as recorder?

Nicholas: Will that be okay with you, Marisa?

Marisa: Sure. As long as I know it’s my responsibility, I don’t have a problem with it.

How can the issue of misunderstood roles affect a team?

2: If a team member appears to misunderstand a role, it is the team leader’s or facilitator’s responsibility to meet with each person to whom the role has been assigned and review his or her duties within that role. True or False?
